Project Recover
Walter “Bert” Mintus enlisted in the Navy in 1942. He served as a Radioman 3rd Class on an Avenger Torpedo plane in the same squadron as former President George H. Bush. Walter’s plane was shot down near the island of Pulau on July 27th, 1944. He and the 2 other members of the plane’s crew were listed as Missing in Action. In 2016, after years of searching, Project Recover found their plane and the remains of one other crew member. Walter was brought home and buried with military honors in his hometown of Portage, PA on Veterans Day 2018.
Project Recover is a nonprofit whose mission is to bring American servicemen, and women, who’re missing in action, home. In a partnership with the University of Delaware and Scripps Institution of Oceanography they use 21st century science and technology to find and repatriate those lost since WWII.
