Kenneth Horn - U.S. Navy 1943-46

Kenneth Horn was born in Elmo, Missouri in 1923. He joined the U.S. Navy Submarine Service in 1943 and saw action in the Pacific during WWII on the USS Pompom. While on a patrol in the Yellow Sea with a Wolf Pack, the Pompom barely survived when the conning tower hatch failed during a dive. The sub reached a depth of 44 feet before the crew could halt the dive. Water poured, partially flooding the conning tower and control room and completing flooding the pump room. The Pompom slowly made her way back to Midway, managing to escape a Japanese convoy’s escorts by making dangerous 18 hour dive. Kenneth left the service at the end of the war in 1946 as a Motor Machinist 3rd Class and now lives in fort Pierce, Florida.
